Crunch Week - This is our final week to finish this year's yearbook. A number of photo sessions are scheduled. We have tracked those areas that we need to work on this week and they are listed on the class' white board. Try to keep this board up-to-date with anything that you feel could use improvement. We're trying to create the best book ever done at PIckering and we need everyone thinking and analyzing how we can improve over past issues.
Theory This Week - One area that we are going to be stressing this week is the concept of creating page layouts that will print and transfer well. This means using Preflight Profiles in InDesign. Download this preflight document and we'll be discussing how this profile can help us avoid pitfalls in getting our book to the publisher and saving time and money by avoiding mistakes. Our Workflow - for creating pages must be consistent and mirrors what is done in industry. Here are the basic steps:
This week ends the first semester of this school year and all students will be taking a mid-term exam on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. The test covers theory we've worked on during the first semester. Be aware that this test, along with your final exam, will account for 1/5 of your final grade - so try to do well.
Because this is a short week, we're going to be focusing on repairing some of the common issues that occur in photography including removing red-eye and color cast from our photos. There are settings on the camera we can use to avoid both of these issues - but they still can crop up given some lighting conditions. Fixing red eye is a pretty straight forward process - both iPhoto and PhotoShop have pretty good red eye removal tools. Fixing color cast can be a little more complicated and it is normal to use a variety of methods to find the best solution. Photoshop will do this better due to the large number of methods available. This video demonstrates the various methods. We'll be using some basic color theory to fix both of these issues. The end project for the week will be a before and after study of three red eye and three color cast images that you have repaired. See my sample portfolio for an example. |
